As I sat watching the New York Giants and the New England Patriots play in one of the greatest upsets in the history of the NFL, I noticed some persuasive commercials that aired during the Superbowl.
The most persuasive commercial that I saw during the Superbowl was the commercial about FedEx. The commercial starts out in an office building with the boss coming in to talk to the shipping department about their new style of shipping that solves all problems with shipping. The boss and the head of the shipping department walk into the shipping department to see this new method.
The new method consists of carrier pigeons taking packages to their destinations. The carrier pigeons are equipped with night vision and a GPS navigation system that tells the carrier pigeons were to deliver the package. This is supposed to be the newest innovation for shipping according to the head of the shipping department. He picks up one of the birds and reads the GPS chip and announces that this particular bird is going to Cleveland.
Next, the head of the shipping department tries to convince the boss by opening the window to watch the carrier pigeons deliver their packages. Once he looked out the window, a huge carrier pigeon flew by carrying a huge package and then the carrier pigeon dropped the package onto the street below.
Finally, when the camera rises up, the viewer can see mass chaos in the streets below. The carrier pigeons are wrecking the town and are not delivering the packages. One of the pigeons lifts the shipping director’s car into the office building. When this occurs, the boss of the company states that they are switching to FedEx.
This commercial is persuasive because the commercial shows that FedEx is the most efficient way to ship business packages to their destination. The carrier pigeons not delivering the packages made the commercial persuasive. This aspect draws the viewer in to think that FedEx is the most efficient method to ship and receive packages. FedEx’s argument made in the FedEx commercial is extremely strong because of the good use of persuasion to persuade the viewer to think that FedEx is the most efficient way to ship packages.
