Translations

When reading "Translations" we can start to think about the importance of language, place, and naming. Below are two prompts on those subjects; pick one and write a response on it by Sunday at 5 pm.

1. When growing up, was there ever a store, park, or area that changed names? How did that change the place (if at all) and did you continue calling it by its old name or by its new name? For example, there is a groccery store near where I live that has changed names several times, but myself and my family still continue to call it by its old name.

2. Does language shape the place that we live? How would your use of language be different if you grew up in a different part of the country? For instance, in Ohio we use the word "pop" to refer to sodas, but in Michigan they just use the word "soda." Another example is that in Alaska there are many words for snow, but the rest of the country only refers to snow with one word. Think of different ways that you would use language differently if you grew up in another part of the country or even another part of the world.
