Jeremiah
I grew up in the small town of Kirkwood, Missouri. Kirkwood has a long and deep history but has always remained a fairly small but bustling town. It was built around the train tracks that come directly from downtown St. Louis and it became somewhat of the upper middle class getaway from living downtown. As time progressed the city began expanding and business started to flock to the town. We were the small town with the big town feel; everything from the local farmers market and historic Kirkwood Train Station to Edward Jones offices and Starbucks on every corner. The town was filled with small family owned and run restaurants. The most famous one of these was Jeremiahs restaurant just down the road from the train station. Across from this was the Custard Station, which through some sort of confusion or something, was also called Jeremiahs. Everyone referred to this small ice cream shop, which was well known across the town, as Jeremiahs. It just seemed to be the natural thing to do. If you would say “hey lets go to the Custard Station” it would take people a moment and they would stop and think about where you are suggesting to go. As time went on and the city grew bigger and bigger Jeremiahs the restaurant went out of business and switched from a restaurant, to a store, back to a restaurant all with a variation of names. Even without the actually Jeremiahs restaurant the Custard Station never lost the confused name. It was a hangout from the hot summers of elementary school until high school. The name confusion gave Jeremiahs somewhat of a hometown feel that only people from the area knew about. Although it wasn’t a big deal it was still something to think back on and remember that it was something special that our town had that brought everyone under the same umbrella.
