Language in the US

Language is an essential part of an individual’s everyday life. Every community possesses different words and phrases they use that are specific to a certain region or to a town in particular. Also, a part of a specific regions language can be attributed to the foreign influence from the non-Caucasians. The different social classes also use different languages, for instance the highest in society uses a more proper form of language where as the lower people in society seem to talk in a different language.
I am from around the Pittsburgh area and we use specific language compared to other cities around the country. First of all, one of the major things that Pittsburgh is known for is saying “yinz”. That is so well known for the Pittsburgh area and a lot of people comment on it. People will hear you talk and say yinz and they will be like are you from Pittsburgh? In addition, another common word is used for the football team the Pittsburgh Steelers, people from the area say “stillers”, and this is very common to hear. Almost all people in the Pittsburgh area roots for the Steelers and if you don’t, you are look upon as weird and out of the loop. Also, it is common for people to say “ya’ll”; this is not specific to the Pittsburgh region only but it is very common. Another word said by Pittsburgh area people that are so called “hicks” is warsh. They use this word for wash and it is the most annoying thing I have ever heard to hear people say warsh.
If I lived in a different area of the country, my language would be different. I would not catch myself saying yinz and stillers because those are local to the Pittsburgh area. I would say different slang terms that would be local to the area. There are a few Canadians on the soccer team and they use many different slang terms than people of the United States. They call all lotion cream for one thing. Also, one major thing they say that we do not say here in the United States is that they say “eh” after a lot of the questions they ask. For instance, they will say “That was a good game, eh?” This is so common for Canadians to say and I make fun of them every time because I love how they speak differently, it really intrigues me. Then, a girl from Texas on the team says “howdy” to greet people with is very common in the Texas area; however it also is said by many people that live in the country and small towns. The words to describe a caffeinated beverage can be pop, soda, cola; these are all interchangeable throughout the country. Throughout the United States, all of these are used in different states, in some areas if you say pop, people look at you like you are weird and say “you mean soda?” and it is just so awkward how that happens. Throughout the country, there are many different words and languages used and there are many words that are isolated in different regions.
