My Family: My Literacy Community

One literacy community that I am a part of is my family. I chose to talk about this community because my family and I are very close and we converse daily. We are also there to support each other and provide help when one of us needs help, regardless of the circumstance.
For our literacy community, there are a lot of rules. The first rule is that one should know how to read. Similarly, one also needs to know how to write. This also includes learning how to write in print and in cursive as both are skills that a person needs in life. After writing something, one needs to know how to edit / proof read one’s work. This is because one should always present their best work. Another rule that we have in our literacy group is that one needs to know how to type; especially as I am now away at college, email is one way that we keep in touch. Another rule that also applies, is to talk every day, as hearing one’s voice makes the person on the other end of the phone seem closer together. Some other rules include showing manners, which means knowing how to say please and thank you. This is a rule because it is important to present oneself in a good light. In addition, another rule is to say I love you because as a family, we are close and it is so important in life to let the people important to you how you feel. Also, another rule is to use proper English. This leads to the next rule, which is to be able to discuss and defend one’s views as everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion and to stand up for oneself. The last rule for our literacy community is that one should be able to know how to read and give directions, because with friends and family living all over the U.S, one should know how to get from one place to the next!
Thus, with the rules established, it is important to know what the conditions are to become a member of this literacy community. The first and maybe the most obvious condition is that one needs to be a family member, or a very close friend that is considered family. In addition, a member of this community needs to know the basic skills of literacy. These are the abilities to: read, write, and talk. There are a lot of other conditions that are really important to this community. One of these conditions is that one agrees to try one’s best and to never give up. These are vital conditions because one may know how to read, write, and talk, but if one does not have a positive outlook, then that person does not contribute their greatest potential to their community. In addition to this positive attitude, one also needs to encourage the other members as the community is only as strong as the least contributing member. Also, a member of this community needs to be responsible, which includes making sure that one does not forget to call, email, etc. Finally, the last condition is that one needs to have a cell phone because with the fast past lives that we lead and the great distances that separate us. These conditions keep us closer and make us stronger members.
These rules and conditions make my literacy community very unique and thus it is an important part of my life.
