Literacy Community

The community that I think of when talking about literacy is the one centered rounded my family. My family is big on reading since when one person starts to read a novel it gets passed onto the next person in my family until it goes all the way around. With this kind of pattern the books tend to get really worn down and break apart. They also get to travel to different areas because we end of shipping them to each other because people live in all different area of the United States.

The rules in the community are not really set in stone or anything. If there are any real rules they are along the lines of if you are done right the book just pass it on. We are big on sharing about what we read with each other, so we do need discuss what we feel about the novel. The novels have to be not based on your field. Since all of my brothers are advanced in their field, they tend to read a lot of what is going on in their field. My two oldest brothers can pass each other document dealing with their field but it never goes farther than that. With these basic rules in place it helps to support us in reading and helps to improve our reading level. Everyone in my family there are all kinds of different levels of reading. My mother for example is a heavy reader who reads a book in about two to three days. The opposite would be like my brother Peter who is so busy with his everyday life that it is hard for him to sit down and read. Since now each of us have a different back around our levels are more divide then they were when we were younger and all of us read the same books as the passed down the line.

Aside from reading there is also the part about writing in my family. Since all of the “children” in the family are in about the same field, we help to proof read each other’s work. An example of this was when I was writing essays to get into college. I sent it to two of my brother who each proof read it and sent me back advice. Thanks to them I didn’t need that much editing with teachers before sending it off. My brother had all written those before and knew what to look for which was a great help.

To become part of the group you need to read the books that get passed around and be part of the family. We all live apart so it doesn’t matter if we can’t be together since we can always talk on the phone. We each went from the basic level of educations and all of the children have gotten off to college so we just keep advancing through the years. We tend to read more classic stuff and when together make allusions to it. For the past year my boyfriend has been able to enter the community and join in the discussion. It was hard for him to enter since it was so closed since it only dealt with my family. He began to read the novels and try to join into to discussion and after sometime we was told what books we were reading and they were passed of too him instead of him borrowing them from me.
